BIOSPAN

Hyoscine Butylbromide is an antispasmodic medicine which is taken to relieve cramps in the stomach, intestines or bladder. In particular, it helps to ease bloating and the spasm-type pain that can be associated with irritable bowel syndrome and diverticular disease. It works by relaxing some of the muscles in your gastrointestinal and urinary systems.

Mechanism of Action

It is an anticholinergic drug with high affinity for muscarinic receptors located on the smooth-muscle cells of the GI tract.  It’s anticholinergic action exerts a smooth-muscle relaxing effect. It goes straight to the site of the pain, allowing cramped muscles to gently relax and return to normal and provides targeted and effective relief from abdominal cramping pain and discomfort.

BIOSPAN blocks acetylcholine receptor in smooth muscles in  GIT

So, Ach cannot bind to smooth muscles in GIT.

Thus, the smooth muscle relaxes.

Relieves spasm.
 

Indications

  •      Spasms of  GIT
  •     Period Pain Cramps (preferably with paracetamol 500mg) 

      Dosage

Route of administration: Oral

Adults and children over 12 years:  20 mg four times a day

Children aged 6 to 12 years: 10 mg three times a day

 For the symptomatic relief of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, the recommended starting dose is 10 mg three times daily, this can be increased up to 20 mg four times daily if necessary.

Biospan can be taken either with or without food.

Route of elimination: Renal

Half-life: 5 hours

Adverse Effects

Common side effects are: Constipation, dry mouth, trouble urinating, or nausea, rash, itching, swelling of the hands or feet, trouble breathing, increased pulse, dizziness, diarrhea, vision problems, eye pain.

As little of the medication crosses the blood brain barrier it has less effects on the brain and therefore has reduced occurrence of the centrally-mediated effects

Contraindications

BIOSPAN is contraindicated in the following populations and situations:

  • Hypersensitivity to hyoscine, belladonna alkaloids, or any component of the formulation
  • In patients with myasthenia gravis, megacolon*, glaucoma or enlarged prostate

Precautions

  • Heart disease
  • Not be taken on a continuous daily basis or for extended periods without investigating the cause of abdominal pain.

Drug Interactions

  • May potentiate anticholinergic effects with antidepressants (tricyclic type), MAO Inhibitors, quinidine, amantadine, antihistamines, anticholinergics, potassium chloride supplements, antacids, absorbent-type antidiarrheal medicines.
