AIRY 10

Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) used for the maintenance treatment of asthma and to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies. It is usually administered orally. It decreases severity and frequency of acute asthma attacks. The Mont in Montelukast stands for Montreal, the place where the drug was developed.

Presentation:

Available in the pack size as 10 tablets X 10 strips

Mechanism of Action:

Montelukast blocks the action of leukotriene D4 on the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor CysLT1 in the lungs and bronchial tubes by binding to it. This reduces the bronchoconstriction otherwise caused by the leukotriene, and results in less inflammation. Because of its method of operation, it is not useful for the treatment of acute asthma attacks.

Indications:
  • Asthma
  • Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD)
  • Exercise induced bronchospasm
  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Urticaria

Montelukast is used as add up therapy with corticosteroids which has better efficacy than single therapy.

Dosage:

Route of administration: Oral

The usual dose of Montelukast in adults and teenagers is 10 mg tablet taken orally a day with or without food.

For asthma, taken in the evening.

For exercise induced bronchospasm, taken 2 hours before exercise.

For allergies, at any time of the day.

Pharmacokinetics:

Absorption: Absorbed in GIT with 58-66% bioavailability

Protein binding: Approximately 99%

Metabolism: Hepatic

Route of elimination: Feces

Half-life: 2.7-5.5 hours

Adverse Effects:

Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, mild rashes, asymptomatic elevations in liver enzymes, and fever.

Contraindications:

AIRY 10 is contraindicated in the following populations and situations:

  • Those patients with hypersensitivity to any product component.
