Omeprazole 20 mg Capsule
Pharmacological Class: Proton Pump Inhibitor
Indications:
- Short-term treatment of erosion and ulceration of the esophagus caused by gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD).
- Peptic Ulcer Disease
- NSAIDs induced gastritis
Mode of Action
Omeprazole binds irreversibly to H+K+ATPase (proton pump) present in the parietal cells, which is the terminal stage in gastric acid secretion. So, omeprazole suppresses the secretion of acid. As it binds irreversibly to the proton pumps, new pumps have to be made before acid production can be resumed.
Dosage:
Peptic Ulcer Disease (20 mg OD),
GERD(20-60 mg daily in 1 or 2 doses)
Initial treatment is of 40 mg OD for generally 8 weeks duration for GERD.
